GMinder is an excellent add-on for Google Calendar that alerts you of scheduled events right on your computer desktop without opening an Internet browser. You just need to configure your Google Calendar and supply the information in the "Calendars" window. You can utilize multiple calendars and downloads the events so you don't have to be online at all times.
